The Most Expensive Rolex Ever Sold: Complete Guide to Paul Newman's $17.75M Daytona

Rolex is universally recognized as the pinnacle of luxury, horological precision, and status. However, among all vintage and modern timepieces produced by the Geneva manufacture, one legendary watch stands far above the rest in auction history.

The most expensive Rolex watch ever sold at auction is the iconic Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 6239, personally owned and worn by Hollywood actor and race car driver Paul Newman.

The Story & Provenance: A Personal Token of Love

In 1968, actress Joanne Woodward gifted this chronograph to her husband, Paul Newman, as he launched his professional motor racing career. Concerned about his safety on the track, Joanne had the caseback custom-engraved with the touching message: “DRIVE CAREFULLY ME”.

Newman wore the watch daily for decades. His endorsement turned what was once an unpopular exotic dial variant into the most sought-after design in watch collecting history—the "Paul Newman Dial". In 1984, Newman handed the watch to James Cox, his daughter Nell's then-boyfriend, as a simple thank-you gift for helping build a treehouse. Decades later, Cox decided to consign the watch to Phillips, donating a significant portion of the proceeds to the Nell Newman Foundation.

Watch Specifications & Key Features

  •     Case: Stainless steel, 36mm diameter.

  •     Dial: Exotic "Paul Newman" dial — off-white with black subdials, Art Deco font numbers, and red outer minute track.

  •     Movement: Manual-wind Caliber Valjoux 722.

  •     Bezel: Stainless steel with engraved tachymeter scale up to 300 units per hour.

Why Did It Fetch $17.75 Million?

The astronomical price reflects its unrivaled provenance, cultural importance, and its status as the "Adam and Eve" of vintage watch collecting—the exact watch that sparked global fascination with the Rolex Daytona.
