History of Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch: Why Every Collector Wants One

History of Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch: Why Every Collector Wants One

Timeless Icon: The Story of Omega Speedmaster and Its Legendary Status

In the realm of fine watchmaking, only a few timepieces transcend horological boundaries to become cultural icons. The Omega Speedmaster Professional is chief among them. It is not merely a tool for measuring time, but the premier chronograph of the space era and a holy grail for watch enthusiasts globally.

OMEGA

1. From the Racetrack to Deep Space

Originally introduced in 1957 (Ref. CK2915), the Speedmaster was created for automotive racing, pioneer-testing an external tachymeter scale on the bezel.

  •       Rigorous NASA Testing (1964–1965): Preparing for the Apollo program, NASA subjected candidate chronographs to extreme thermal shock (-18°C to +93°C), high pressure, and severe vibrations. In March 1965, the Omega Speedmaster was declared "Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions".

  •       First Watch on the Moon (1969): On July 20, 1969, during Apollo 11, Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the lunar surface wearing his Speedmaster (Ref. ST 105.012), earning the watch its revered moniker: The Moonwatch.

  •       Apollo 13 Rescue: In 1970, after timing the critical 14-second engine burn on the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission to ensure a safe return to Earth, NASA presented Omega with the prestigious Silver Snoopy Award.

2. Key Pillars of Speedmaster Popularity

  •       Unmistakable Design: Matte black dial, twisted "Lyre" lugs, and the iconic "Dot Over 90" (DON) bezel ring.

  •       Modern Engineering: Powered by the manual-wind Calibre 3861, featuring a Co-Axial escapement and METAS Master Chronometer certification resistant to 15,000 Gauss.

  •       Dual Crystal Options: Traditional Hesalite acrylic or scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

3. Why Every Collector Desires the Speedmaster

The Speedmaster offers unparalleled heritage, strong secondary market liquidity, and entry into a passionate global community united under the #SpeedyTuesday banner.
